The Jets are re-signing defensive lineman Mike Pennel. Manish Mehta first broke the story.

If you are wondering how the Jets are “re-signing” Pennel, it would be understandable. He has never actually played a game for the team. The Jets claimed him off waivers after the season ended from the Packers. It was a bit of an unusual move since his contract was over after 2016. Pennel was suspended twice in 2016, though. The Jets presumably claimed him to get him into their building and examine whether he was worth a new contract. They clearly believe he is.
Pennel was undrafted out of CSU-Pueblo in 2014. The 25 year old developed into a solid rotational player in Green Bay before suspensions for the first four and last four games of 2016 due to violations of the league’s substance abuse policy.
Pennel will likely be competing for a roster spot in training camp.
