Jason LaCanfora reports free agent linebacker Dont’a Hightower is visiting the Jets.
Dont'a Hightower is visiting the Jets. Meeting supposed to wrap up on Monday. Patriots still very interested. Other teams keeping tabs— Jason La Canfora (@JasonLaCanfora) March 13, 2017
LaCanfora also notes that the Jets might face an uphill battle to land his services.
With Dont'a Hightower there's a very strong perception among other teams he's going back to Pats for $10M/yr. The ties to NE run deep...— Jason La Canfora (@JasonLaCanfora) March 13, 2017
Perhaps the Jets or someone else give him significantly more than 10/yr but barring that the industry assumption is Hightower returns to NE— Jason La Canfora (@JasonLaCanfora) March 13, 2017
I am sure I don’t need to convince you why the Jets’ interest in Hightower is logical, but I will try anyway. Hightower is a blue chip talent at linebacker, and the Jets have little in the way of high end talent anywhere on their roster. At 27 years old, Hightower presumably has a number of good years in front of him.
The real question here is how serious Hightower is about considering the Jets. Does he want to get the highest offer, or is he bluffing? Is he trying to squeeze out more money from the Patriots by threatening to go to a division rival? Of course the Jets aren’t much of a threat to New England even with Hightower, but will the thought of losing him get the Pats to go a little higher?
These are things we will only learn in the next few days.
