Jets Led NFL in Run Sacks in 2016

New, comments
Steve Mitchell-USA TODAY Sports

Yesterday we talked a bit about run sacks, a concept I came up with to note tackles on run plays where the opposing teams has either no gain or a loss. These are celebrated as sacks on passing downs, but they don't get as much attention on run plays.

Jets teammates Leonard Williams and Sheldon Richardson tied for third in the league in this category according to Pro Football Reference's Play Index.

Today I wanted to expand this and look at run sacks by team. With a pair of Jets among the league leaders, it is no surprise they take the top spot in the league according to the Play Index.

And although the run game was up and down for the Jets during the season, they did a pretty good job avoiding no gain and negative rushes. Here are the run sacks allowed on offense.

Many people tell you the NFL is a passing league, and the Jets' struggles overall despite this type of running success.
