Jets Announce They Will Cut Darrelle Revis

The Jets have announced they will cut cornerback Darrelle Revis.

There is no shock in this move. Despite some speculation about a possible paycut and/or position change, it was difficult to see a way it made sense to keep Revis in 2017.

As they say, you can’t go home again. Revis’ second stint was substantially less successful than his first. He produced a solid 2015, but it ended on a sour note as he was torched by Sammy Watkins in a season-ending loss to the Bills that cost the Jets a Playoff spot. His 2016 was a catastrophe from the start. He was shredded by A.J. Green on Opening Day and never really found his footing.

Over the Cap has this move clearing over $7 million in cap space. It could be more as the Jets will get money back dollar for dollar up to $6 million if Revis signs a deal with a new team.

Revis’ first stint with the team saw him develop into the game’s best cornerback and a surefire Ring of Honor player. These things don’t always have storybook endings, though. His time with the Jets ends off a really rough season and a pending criminal case against him. It might be the end of his career as well.
