Winters has been dealing with an abdominal injury. He missed last Sunday’s game against the Chargers as a result, although he had been listed on the injury report for weeks with the ailment. It is possible the injury got worse. It is also possible the Jets just decided to shut him down and not risk further aggravating it once they were officially eliminated from postseason contention. This is the third time in Winters’ five NFL seasons he will end the year on injured reserve.
Simon was a seventh round pick by the Jets in 2015. He lost a training camp battle for the backup nose tackle spot to Mike Pennel but was signed to the practice squad after being waived.
The Jets signed defensive lineman Francis Callon to the practice squad to take Simon’s spot.
