Last week, I asked which Panther Jets fans would want most on their team, and there were just two players raking in 93% of the votes: elite inside linebacker Luke Kuechly and the former MVP quarterback, Cam Newton.
This week, the Kansas City Chiefs come into town, and though they are struggling, possess a roster full of talented players. Unlike Carolina, This team has more than two viable options. Which one Chief would you most want to come over to the Jets?
The Chiefs have been known as a defensive team, but that unit has slipped this year, currently ranked 26th in weighted DVOA. There is one active defensive Chief I would really consider: Justin Houston. Still only 28, he’s one of the league’s premiere pass rushers and would solve a longtime pressing need in Florham Park. The only other Chief defender I’d consider is Eric Berry. Berry unfortunately went down with a season-ending injury in Week 1, but is as talented safety as there is in the NFL. Though, that position is not a need for the Jets.
Offensively there is actually a lot of intrigue despite the unit’s recent struggles. Travis Kelce is an undoubted top-5 tight end consistently who would provide any offense with a boost. Tyreek Hill is as unstoppable with the ball in his hands as any player in the NFL. The Jets have had a stagnant return game for a long time now, and Hill would likely solve that problem. Then there is Kareem Hunt. The rookie running back has flashed some serious playmaking ability and put up some big numbers right off the bat. Alex Smith has proven to be a consistent decent starting quarterback, but has showcased a limited ceiling.
My final decision? I’d take Houston. Pass rushing is so important in football, especially in today’s quarterback-friendly NFL. Having players who can win any matchup and find their way into the backfield on a consistent basis are of premium value. Some of the talent the Jets have up front goes to waste at times (Leonard Williams) as they attract attention defensive linemen usually don’t get when they have liable pass rushers to their sides. Justin Houston would patch a hole that has existed for too long in New York.
Cornerback Marcus Peters and rookie quarterback Patrick Mahomes have cases as well.
How about you? Which Chief would you most want with the Jets?
