What If Wednesday: What if the Jets drafted a quarterback this year?

NFL: New York Jets at Detroit Lions Tim Fuller-USA TODAY Sports

You know, folks, I’m not really one to speculate here. But maybe you are. So let’s hop onto the What If Machine, let’s make like John Lennon and imagine, let’s put our thinking caps on and give it a think. This week’s question: What if the Jets had drafted a quarterback this year?

What if the Jets had traded up? Who would have they selected? The Chicago Bears did that and selected Mitchell Trubisky. What if they picked a QB at number 6? Who would they have gotten? The Kansas City Chiefs picked Patrick Mahomes at 10, and the Houston Texans picked Deshaun Watson at 12.

Gang Green’s pick was safety Jamal Adams, but they still could have gotten their signal caller later. The Cleveland Browns picked Deshaun Kizer in Round 2. The third rounders were Davis Webb to the New York Giants and C.J. Beathard to the San Francisco 49ers. The Pittsburgh Steelers selected Joshua Dobbs in Round 4. And of course, we are all familiar with the Buffalo Bills’ fifth rounder Nathan Peterman. Then there are the Detroit Lions’ Brad Kaaya in the 6th Round and the Denver Broncos’ Chad Kelly in the last round.

Most importantly, whoever the 2017 rookie quarterback would have been, do you even trust the New York Jets coaching staff to develop him? Would they have thrown him into the fire? Could he actually beat out Josh McCown? Would you have done what the Bills did with Tyrod Taylor? Can a rookie quarterback handle the pressure of the New York market? Would he be riding pine with Bryce Petty and Christian Hackenberg? Would the Jets carry four quarterbacks again?

Anywhoo... Who would you pick? In what round? And how would you develop him?

If you don’t want to engage in hypotheticals, of course, then you don’t have to participate. But if you want to, it’s totally free! Talk amongst yourselves, Gang Green Gangsters.
