Jets Move Jordan Leggett To IR, Sign DL Xavier Cooper

NFL: Philadelphia Eagles at New York Jets Ed Mulholland-USA TODAY Sports

The New York Jets have placed rookie tight end Jordan Leggett on the injured reserve list. Leggett was a 5th round draft choice by the Jets in the 2017 NFL draft. He saw some playing time in preseason but was not overly impressive. Leggett injured his knee late in August and never saw the field in regular season action, despite remaining on the 53 man roster throughout. Leggett recently aggravated the injury in practice, and now his 2017 season is over.

Replacing Leggett on the Jets 53 man roster is defensive lineman Xavier Cooper. Cooper was signed by the Jets after being released by the San Francisco 49ers.

Xavier Cooper is a 6’ 3”, 295 pound defensive lineman out of Washington State University. Cooper was originally selected by the Cleveland Browns with the 96th overall selection in the 3rd round of the 2015 NFL draft. Cooper is scheme versatile, capable of playing defensive end in a 34 alignment and defensive tackle in a 43 alignment. Cooper possesses rare speed and agility for a man his size. He ran a 4.86 40 yard dash at the NFL Combine and a 3 cone shuttle in 7.23 seconds. Less than 10 players over 290 pounds have ever run a sub 4.9 40 yard dash and a sub 7.25 3 cone drill. Two of them were J.J. Watt and Mario Williams.

Xavier Cooper was cut by the Browns after two seasons of limited impact, and he was cut by the 49ers after half a season of minimal impact. In his 2.5 NFL seasons to date Cooper has played in 32 games and started two. He has amassed a total of two sacks and 46 tackles.
