The division rival Patriots have made a big trade with the San Francisco 49ers. They have dealt their young quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo to the Bay Area for a second round pick.
To repeat: 49ers are trading a 2018 2nd-round draft pick for Patriots QB Jimmy Garoppolo, sources tell ESPN.

As with any move involving New England, this indirectly involves the Jets.
It means:
- Garoppolo is not Tom Brady’s heir apparent.
- For those of you who were wondering about the Jets pursuing Garoppolo in free agency, that seems to be off the table.
- Kirk Cousins, however, becomes a more realistic possibility. There had been plenty of speculation that Cousins would look to reunite with his old offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan if he left Washington. If he isn’t happy with his current team, he will have to look elsewhere.
- Tom Brady is currently the only quarterback on New England’s roster.
