Do the Jets need a uniform and logo update? - A complete Jets brand review

Are you cool with the classics or is a modern rebrand in order?

The debate among Jets fans concerning the team’s design is a conflicted one. Some are OK with the team’s classic, simple look. Some feel the look is too bland and the team needs to make a modern overhaul similar to those made by teams like the Dolphins, Jaguars, Seahawks, Browns, and Lions in recent years.

In my opinion, I am mostly fine with the team’s current identity, with just a few little things I wish would be added. Here are my takes on each part of the team brand.

JERSEYS/PANTS

It’s an old-school look that doesn’t grind the eyes. The uniforms are simple yet bold. The striping and block numbers work well together without going overboard. Modern overhauls can be risky. Take a look at Miami and Jacksonville. With today’s makeovers you can get some really wacky designs. Some may think sticking to tradition only works if your team actually has a good history, but the Jets have a classic, gritty feel to them. Their uniforms represent that.

Now, which jersey/pants combo is the best? Here’s a look at the choices:

In my opinion, I like the green jersey and the white pants combo the best. It allows the team’s primary color to pop out while meshing well with the green-striped white pants. What’s your favorite standard combo?

COLORS

Some have wanted the Jets to change their color scheme, perhaps adding a black or lightening the green. I’m OK with what they have. The dark green is unique and keeps them separated from teams like the Packers and Eagles who sport different shades of the color. The Jets are also the only team in the Big 4 with the strict green/white scheme across all of their uniforms (if you’re thinking of the Celtics, they have grey and black alternates), a unique identity that I’m a fan of. A third color would have to be used very slightly to work, perhaps a grey or silver.

I’ve seen many fans suggest a return to the kelly green. Here’s a flashback to the color rush uniforms from 2015.

HELMETS

The Jets have introduced a couple new helmets over the past couple seasons. In my opinion, both would be upgrades over the current helmet, which is one element I think they should change. The facemask is too thin and small to allow the current dark green to stand out, so it actually looks black most of the time. Above you can see Chris Ivory sporting the shiny chrome design that helps the green stand out much more. Below you can see the white facemask the team wore in Buffalo last season and in Week 4 against Jacksonville this year.

LOGO

Again, it depends on your position, but I am OK with the Jets’ current logo. Classic yet bold. The Jets wordmark is aggressive but still swiftly progressing. The football and NY in the background bring it together. Also keep in mind that the Jets have been pretty successful since going to this logo, with 3 AFC Championship appearances and a .500+ record in 13 of 19 seasons.

The logo used from 1978-1997 has been a popular choice to go back to.

While I do like the current logo, I do think it would be fun to actually add some “Jet” elements to the identity, perhaps in an alternate logo that could appear on the uniform. If they could work it in the right way, I would be a fan of it. I think the above logo is a little too empty, though. It doesn’t really come together. The classic logo below is a start, but this one is too old and cartoon-ish to me. A modernized version might work.

Overall, there’s nothing besides possibly the green facemask that I look at and feel that I really don’t like. However, there is still room for some more creativity. I’d be all for a new alternate jersey, logo, or some minor modernizing tweaks, but I like the current essence and don’t feel the need for an overhaul.

What do you think? Do the Jets need new uniforms? New helmets? New colors? A new logo? All of the above? Let us know.
