The New York Jets have made a flurry of roster moves recently. Let’s bring things up to date.
The Jets have placed cornerback Xavier Coleman on injured reserve. Coleman was a recent practice squad call up. He made his NFL debut against the New England Patriots, played a few snaps in the Miami game, got injured, and is now done for the year.
The Jets replaced Coleman on the roster with old friend tight end Neal Sterling, who you may recall was with the Jets earlier this year. Sterling had one catch for eight yards this year in a Jets uniform before being cut on October 5th. Sterling’s return suggests rookie tight end Jordan Leggett’s knee injury is not healing as well as hoped.
The Jets have also activated defensive back Robert Nelson from the practice squad. Nelson is a 27 year old, 5’ 10”, 175 pound defensive back out of Arizona State and Louisiana-Monroe. Nelson went undrafted in 2014 and was originally signed by the Cleveland Browns. In 2015 Nelson was with the Arizona Cardinals organization briefly but never appeared in a game. Nelson spent the 2016 season with the Houston Texans, where he played in 11 games and registered nine tackles, two passes defended and one interception. Nelson replaces running back Travaris Cadet on the roster, who was cut 4 weeks after the Jets signed him in late September.
In other moves the Jets have cut safety Harold Jones-Quartey from the practice squad, and they have signed safety/linebacker Jeremy Cash and running back Akeem Judd to the practice squad.
It’s always nice to have Cash on hand. Jeremy Cash is a soon to be 25 year old (December 2), 6’ 0”, 230 pound safety/linebacker hybrid. He has pretty good speed in the mid 4.5 range, and he hits like a freight train, but his coverage skills are rudimentary. Cash was the 2015 ACC Defensive Player of the Year. He was originally signed as a 2016 undrafted free agent out of Duke by the Arizona Cardinals. Cash has the dubious distinction of appearing in nine games for the Cardinals in 2016 and 2017 without ever registering a statistic of any kind.
Akeem Judd is a 24 year old, 5’ 10”, 225 pound power back out of the University of Mississippi. He signed as an undrafted free agent in 2017 with the Tennessee Titans. Those with an unnaturally keen memory of the 2017 preseason may recall Judd putting a beat down on the Jets defense in the first preseason game of 2017.
