They made it as difficult and excruciating as possible, but the Jets rewarded their fans with a 23-20 win over the Jaguars in overtime today at MetLife Stadium.
The Jets had a 10 point lead in the final 11:00 of the fourth quarter. They were on the Jacksonville 14 on the verge of scoring a knockout touchdown. Then disaster struck. Myles Jack returned a wayward lateral from Josh McCown to Bilal Powell 82 yards for a touchdown.
McCown later threw an interception as Powell slipped going out on a route that set up a Jacksonville game-tying field goal.
Through it all, there were at least five different points where the Jets could have lost the game. The Jaguars dropped two potentially huge McCown interceptions. They couldn’t recover a McCown fumble. They had a go-ahead touchdown wiped out on a penalty, and dropped a key pass that would have put them into field goal range in overtime.
Ultimately, a Lachlan Edwards 70 yard punt in overtime flipped field position, the defense got a huge stop, and Chandler Catanzaro nailed a field goal in the final minute of overtime to win the game for the Jets.
The Jets are now 2-2 through their first quarter of the season. Some people didn’t think they’d win 2 games all year. They are tied with the Patriots in the standings.
Celebrate below. We will have more later.
