The Detroit Lions travel to the Pacific Northwest to take on the Seattle Seahawks in the marquee nightcap of the Saturday wild card games.
Neither team comes into the game with much momentum. The Lions were challenging the Dallas Cowboys for the #1 seed in the NFC a few weeks ago. Then Matthew Stafford suffered an injury to his throwing hand, the Lions faced three straight playoff teams to end the season, and they lost all three games. Instead of a first round bye the Lions got the 6th and final NFC seed and a date with the Seahawks in the wild card round.
The Seahawks have their own problems, having lost superstar safety Earl Thomas for the season and ending the year losers of three of their last six games. 10 games into the season the Seahawks were challengers for the #1 seed; now they're just another team in the wild card round. With the defense showing cracks and Russell Wilson suffering through the worst year of his outstanding career the Seahawks look more vulnerable than they have in years. However, the Seahawks still have home field advantage for the wild card round, and they own the longest home winning streak in NFL playoff history, now standing at nine straight wins and counting. The Seahawks may have the best home field advantage in the NFL, and finished the 2016 season with a 7-1 home record. The Lions had a pedestrian 3-5 record on the road this year and did not beat a winning team on the road all season.
With Matthew Stafford less than 100%, a formidable Seattle home field advantage and a poor Lions road record this game would appear to set up for a Seahawks victory. Nonetheless they play the games for a reason, and Matthew Stafford is good enough that without Earl Thomas roaming the Seattle defensive backfield a hot Stafford could certainly engineer an upset.
