ESPN’s Adam Schefter was reportedly told by somebody on the Jets coaching staff that rookie quarterback Christian Hackenberg looked very unimpressive all season.

An anonymous New York Jets coach told ESPN's Adam Schefter that former Penn State quarterback Christian Hackenberg "couldn't hit the ocean," with team officials also saying the rookie regressed this year.

For his part, Jets head coach Todd Bowles said this wasn’t so in his postgame press conference following a season finale victory over the Bills.

On the ESPN report that a Jets coach said Hackenberg ‘can’t throw the ball into the ocean’ and if that’s how his staff feels…

Not at all.

Of course nobody can say for sure, but sometimes actions matter more than words. It probably doesn’t speak well of Hackenberg that he couldn’t get onto the field of a team that had one of the worst quarterback situations in the league, even in a totally meaningless game at the end of the year.

I’m sure Hackenberg can hit the ocean, but I’m just as sure that his game needs a tremendous amount of work and improvement.

We will know more about how the Jets really feel based on how they address the quarterback position in the offseason.
