How the Jets’ AFC East Competition Did in Week 2

There was only one other game in the AFC East this week. The Jets beat one AFC East opponent. The other two teams in the division played each other.

The Patriots defeated the Dolphins 31-24 in Foxborough.

New England jumped out to a 24-0 lead on the strength of three touchdown passes by Jimmy Garoppolo. Garoppolo had to leave the game before halftime, however, after suffering an apparent shoulder injury. He would not return.

The Dolphins made a game of it, scoring 21 unanswered after a LeGarrette Blount touchdown gave the Pats a 31-3 third quarter lead. Miami had the ball with a chance to tie and force overtime near the end of the game, but the rally fell short.

For New England, the win came at a cost. Garoppolo is out for Thursday’s game against Houston and could miss even more time. This means the Patriots are looking at starting rookie Jacoby Brissett on a short week.

It is one thing to have a full offseason to get a guy with two years in the system ready to start four games. It is another to have four days to get a rookie ready to start a game. New England is still two weeks away from Tom Brady’s return.
