The Jets lost to the Eagles tonight in the preseason finale 14-6. Gang Green finishes the 2016 preseason with a 1-3 record.
Christian Hackenberg got extended action after Bryce Petty suffered an early shoulder injury. The results were about as ugly as one could imagine. Hackenberg only completed 11 of 31 passes for 54 yards. He threw a pick six as well. It's difficult to fathom numbers that bad. Suffice it to say, we are probably not going to see much of Hackenberg in the regular season. He remains a major project.
Hackenberg probably thought he was back at Penn State because the offense line might have been the worst part of the offense. This group has no depth. Hackenberg was under constant duress. Brandon Shell might have played himself off the roster. One might expect the Jets to explore the waiver wire.
The defense amazingly was the only of the three phases to not surrender any points for the Jets. In addition to Hackenberg's pick six, the Eagles returned a punt for a touchdonw. Deon Simon, Ronald Martin, and Taiwan Jones were among the standouts for the defense.
Now the Jets must cut their roster from 75 to 53 by Saturday at 4:00 p.m. Eastern.
