Devin Smith to Begin Regular Season on PUP List

Noah K. Murray-USA TODAY Sports

The Jets announced today second year wide receiver Devin Smith will begin the 2016 regular season on the physically unable to perform (PUP) list. Smith was the team's second round pick in the 2015 Draft. His 2015 season ended with a torn ACL.

This does not come as a surprise. Smith's injury happened late in the season in 2015. He has not shown signs of being ready to go at the start of this coming season.

By starting the season on the PUP list, Smith will have to sit out the first six weeks. After the first six weeks, the Jets will have a five week window where Smith can start practicing. If and when he does start practicing, the Jets will have a 21 day to window to decide whether to promote him to the active roster or shut him down for the season. By placing Smith on the list now, he will not count against the 75 man roster the Jets need to have by Tuesday.

Breno Giacomini remains on the preseason PUP list, but he is still eligible to come off before the start of the regular season.
