Jets Roster Analysis: Can Doug Middleton Make the Team?

Noah K. Murray-USA TODAY Sports

As we approach the 2016 season, we are going to profile the players on the roster. Today we look at Doug Middleton.

Name: Doug Middleton

Number: 39

Year With Jets: 1st

Projected Role: Competing for roster spot as a safety/special teamer

His 2015: Middleton started all 12 games at Appalachian State in his senior year, earning an Honorable Mention All Sun Belt Conference nod. He signed with the Jets as an undrafted free agent.

2016 will be a success if: Middleton makes the practice squad and sticks for the entire year. That is a fairly standard measure of success for players in his shoes. It is possible he could make the team if he shows value on special teams, but a more likely scenario is for Middleton to be a practice squader. There have been reports he is having a strong camp, but the Jets have good safety depth. Safety also is not an easy position for a rookie in this defense. Any contribution on defense Middleton makes will not likely come in 2016.

Odds of making the roster: Longshot (less than 25%)
