Five Jets to Watch on Offense in Preseason Opener

Noah K. Murray-USA TODAY Sports

The preseason kicks off tonight as the Jets face the Jacksonville Jaguars. Here are five Jets on offense who have my interest.

Brandon Marshall: Marshall slimmed down during the offseason on what he called the Todd Bowles diet. Reports out of training camp indicate he looks quicker as a result. This is the first chance we get to see for ourselves on the field.

Ryan Clady: The level at which Clady will play is a bit of a mystery because he has missed so much time over the last three seasons. How much athleticism does he still have? Tonight we will get our first indication.

Jalin Marshall: Let's talk about the other Marshall for a second. He has been one of the most talked about players in training camp. The undrafted rookie has been turning heads in practice. Tonight is the first look for most of us at what he can provide both on offense and in the return game.

Bryce Petty: This is not a particularly intriguing preseason at quarterback for the Jets. There is no competition for the job, and preseason just isn't going to mean a whole lot. The top two quarterbacks have a bunch of starting experience. Will it really make anybody much higher or lower on Ryan Fitzpatrick or Geno Smith if either of these guys lights it up or struggles in preseason? Petty is another story. All we have on him is preseason film, and there were a lot of issues last year. We can gauge whether he has improved mechanical flaws and see to what extent he has improved going through progressions, identifying fronts and coverages, etc.

Brent Qvale: He got a bit of buzz in the offseason as a guy who could be part of the Jets' plans. Has the offensive lineman gotten better? Could he reach a point to be considered for a starting or primary backup role?
