As we approach the season, we are going to count down the history of Jets jersey numbers along with some of the notable players to wear each number. Today we will look at number 79.

The Jets have a star-crossed history, but one place where they historically have produced excellent players was on the offensive line. Marvin Powell was another of these success stories. He was the fourth overall pick out of USC in 1977, part of a fabled Draft class that included Wesley Walker and Joe Klecko. Powell went to five Pro Bowls and was a three-time First Team All Pro at tackle in nine seasons with the Jets.

Back in 2003, Powell was named as tackle on the Jets' All-Time Four Decade Team along with Winston Hill and Jason Fabini.

Powell eventually graduated with a law degree from New York University and rose to become President of the Players Union.
