Jets Jersey Countdown: Number 91

As we approach the season, we are going to count down the history of Jets jersey numbers along with some of the notable players to wear each number. Today we will look at number 91.

When it comes to the number 91, Sione Pouha stands above all others in AV. The first two rounds of the 2005 NFL Draft were not kind to the Jets. After trading down, they came away with Doug Jolley, Mike Nugent, and Justin Miller. In the third round, however, the team came away with Utah's Sione Pouha.

Because he went on a Mormon mission before attending Utah, Pouha was already 26 by the time the Jets drafted him. It took Pouha until his fifth season to crack the starting lineup, and that happened only because Kris Jenkins was injured. Due to his advanced age at the time he entered the league and the time it took him to develop, the Jets only got three peak seasons out of Pouha. Those were top tier years, though, as Pouha was the prototypical space eating run stuffer teams want at nose tackle. Eventually a back problem led to a decline in play in 2012. Pouha was out of the league after that season, but he had a very nice run for the Jets.

Paul Frase and Sheldon Richardson are other notable players to wear 91 for the Jets.
