Legendary NFL defensive coach Buddy Ryan passed away today at age 85.
Ryan was known as a brilliant defensive innovator. He won two Super Bowls as an assistant coach. Of the two, he is better known for being the defensive coordinator of the legendary 1985 defense. Many do not realize it, but he was also part of the defensive coaching staff of the Super Bowl III Champion Jets, cementing his place in franchise history.
He also was the father of Rex Ryan, Jets head coach from 2009 through 2014. No matter your feelings on Rex, he is one of the most consequential people in franchise history. He learned what he knew about defense from his father.
The Jets put together some nice reflections on Ryan's life here.
Sincerest condolences go to his loved ones during this difficult time.
