Jets Roster Analysis: Will Leonard Williams Have a Breakout Year?

Ed Mulholland-USA TODAY Sports

As we approach the 2016 season, we are going to profile the players on the roster. Today we look at Leonard Williams.

Name: Leonard Williams

Number: 92

Year With Jets: 2nd

Projected Role: Starter Level Snaps on the Defensive Line

His 2015: When Williams unexpectedly fell to the Jets, Mike Maccagnan grabbed the player many thought was the most talented in the Draft despite a surplus of young defensive line talent. Sheldon Richardson's suspension gave Williams more playing time than expected. He ended up playing very well for a rookie, more than holding his own despite only being 21 years old. He was among the league leaders in tackles against the run for no gain or a loss. He generated more pressure as a pass rusher than his raw sack numbers would indicate, leading rookies in quarterback hits.

2016 will be a success if: Williams follows in the footsteps of his fellow linemen Sheldon Richardson and Muhammad Wilkerson and has a breakout second season. The hope is the run defense gets even better, and Williams becomes more of a force as a pass rusher. Is it unfair to ask a player to be a star? This was a top ten pick who was widely believed to be the best player in his class. The Jets didn't add a player at a spot where they were strong to be an ordinary starter. Williams has all of the potential in the world.

Odds of making the roster: Lock (>99%)
