Yesterday at Jets rookie minicamp, head coach Todd Bowles was asked about the status of wide receiver Devin Smith. The receiver tore his ACL in December against the Titans. The head coach still does not have a timeframe for the return of the receiver.
On when he expects Devin Smith to return to practice…
I’m not sure. Coming off an injury like that we will just have to wait and see. I just have to listen to what the trainers and doctors tell me and see how he progresses.
On if he thinks training camp is a possibility for Smith’s return…
I’m not sure.
Muhammad Wilkerson is also coming off an injury. If a player like Wilkerson misses offseason and training camp reps, it is no big deal. He is fully developed.
When the Jets drafted Smith, they probably understood he was a bit of a project. Where do projects learn how to play? It is on the practice field. I have long thought missing most of training camp with a rib injury set him back. He lost valuable chances to learn in camp and preseason. Now we are talking about him missing the offseason program and potentially part of training camp. Smith's timetable to become a legitimate contributor has likely been pushed back more.
