The Jets have selected punter Lachlan Edwards with the 235th pick in the 2016 NFL Draft. Edwards punted at Sam Houston State. The Jets acquired this pick in the Ryan Clady trade. It was traded to the Texans then to the Broncos and finally to the Jets.
This move is no great surprise. The Jets did not have a punter on their roster after Ryan Quigley left in free agency to go to the Eagles. The Jets did not make any sort of effort to keep Quigley. He was an ineffective punter, part of the special teams unit that had a big role in the Jets narrowly missing the Playoffs in 2015.
Edwards averaged 42.8 yards per punt during his college career.
He was born in Australia. His selection continues the Jets tradition of Australian punters after Ben Graham's stint with the team from 2005 through 2008.
The seventh round is a spot where I like taking a kicking specialist. The odds of hitting on a pick are generally low. This is one place where you can legitimately find a long-term player.
