In Friday's second round of the NFL Draft, the Jets selected Christian Hackenberg, a quarterback from Penn State.
I appreciate that Mike Maccagnan is trying to make something happen at the quarterback position. The Jets at the very least had to be in the market for a long-term solution at the most important position on the field.
While I do applaud the search for a quarterback, I cannot say I am a big fan of the particular player they chose. Hackenberg was one of my least favorite quarterbacks in this class. He did face some poor circumstances at Penn State, but he developed into a very inaccurate quarterback with inconsistent mechanics. While he was pressured far too frequently, part of being a quarterback is having some measure of success when pressure hits.
Look, I'm smart enough to know that I don't have all of the answers. I certainly have been wrong before. My opinion on Hackenberg does not mean he is automatically going to be terrible.
If you want my opinion, though, I am not a big fan. This seems several rounds too early to me for a quarterback who is this much of a project.
What do you think?
