The NFL draft is fast approaching, and the Jets are involved in various draft day scenarios being floated around NFL circles.
Are we the team showing interest in the #2 overall selection? A Cleveland Browns executive confirmed today that there is interest in that selection and it's widely believed that the Browns are open to trading that pick.
Are we looking to move down in the draft? A lot of "experts" believe the real value in this draft lies between selections 30-75, so do we move down and sacrifice #20 overall to pick up more selections within this boundary.
Mel Kiper has us selecting the following players in his latest mock:
Round 1 (20): Germain Ifedi, OT, Texas A&M
Round 2 (51): Connor Cook, QB, Michigan State
Round 3 (83): Nick Vannett, TE, Ohio State
I can't say as I'm enamoured with this. Ifedi has tremendous size but he wasn't as good at left tackle as he was playing inside. He may have the potential to move to left tackle in time, but right now I view him more as a guard and I wouldn't be willing to spend the #20 overall pick on a guard like Ifedi.
I also don't rate Connor Cook, he has the size and shows some nice touch on his passes, but I've seen him sling the ball into heavy traffic far too often, and he can get knocked off his game quite easily. He has talent, but is he ever going to be a franchise QB?
With Vannett, I quite like him as a player and if the Jets see obvious upside then why not. However I think I want to see how Amaro returns from injury before jumping over another tight end with a high value selection.
