While Sherels is listed as a cornerback, he really is known as a return man. As a punt returner, he owns a very good 10.2 yard career average on 148 attempts. He also has a solid 26.6 yard average returning kicks.
It is no secret that Jets special teams were a big problem in 2015. It was one of the biggest reasons the team missed the Playoffs. They never found answers in many areas, including the return game. Today's releasing of Jeremy Kerley added a practice element to this visit as well. Kerley was the punt returner.
The Jets do not have a ton of money to spend, but upgrading their special teams might be a way to improve the roster without needing a major investment.
