Free agency may be the flavour of the day, but the draft is still very much in focus for everyone here at GGN. What we do in free agency will directly alter our plan for free agency. However at the moment, ESPN's Mel Kiper has the Jets selecting Ezekiel Elliott from Ohio State:
20. New York Jets
*Ezekiel Elliott, RB, Ohio State
While I think Elliott could certainly qualify as "best player available" here, I'm not sure the Jets would take a running back this high. But that will be the question for every team, and Elliott sure would see the field for them.
Free-agency effect: Chris Ivory is likely to be gone, so even if it's not at this spot, I would expect the Jets to grab a running back at some point. I'll say this: If Ryan Fitzpatrick leaves, this is a dark horse spot for a QB.
It's a regular argument these days, is it worth selecting a running back in the first round considering the devaluation of the position over the last decade. Most teams have a committee approach to their backfield limiting RB value, consider that they break down quicker than any other position group, you can understand why people have their reservations.
However, you can't ignore the fact that Elliott may be a once in a generation talent, he has that kind of ability. So if you have the chance to get a guy like that, do you do it? Consider the Jets have absolutely nothing at running back at the moment, and if Ivory and Powell sign elsewhere, the Jets will need to address this position.
I've been a strong supporter of Elliott from the start, and I'm not going to change my opinion now. If the Jets use the #20 overall selection on the position. I'll be a happy chap.
