Rich Cimini outlined some of the options the Jets might have at quarterback if Ryan Fitzpatrick does not re-sign. He indicated Josh McCown of Cleveland is a player in whom the team has some interest.
The Jets, who met with McCown last February before trading for Fitzpatrick, have interest. They'd rather wait until he's released, which seems inevitable, but that could be a few more weeks. The 36-year-old McCown is 18-39 as a starter.
I think McCown is a terrible option. In fact, I think he's such a bad option that I wouldn't even pursue him. I would rather go with Geno Smith, who probably would beat him out in an open competition and at least theoretically can grow. McCown is going to be 37 by the time the season starts. That is the age where quarterbacks are past their prime. McCown never had a prime, though. He has had minimal success as an NFL quarterback.
