Brandon Marshall: Jets Are Still United

NFL: Indianapolis Colts at New York Jets Ed Mulholland-USA TODAY Sports

The Jets are having a terrible season. That may be the biggest understatement of the year, it’s been horrendous, unwatchable at points. The fans have questioned Bowles, the media have questioned Bowles and I know we’ve questioned Bowles, but the team is still united in their backing of the embattled head coach, according to Brandon Marshall anyway.

"You guys do remember a couple of years ago, he was probably the most coveted coach out there, All of a sudden, he lost it?"

"You can look at it from the outside and say this is a similar situation, but it's not. That whole organization was divided. That's not the case here. We're together. We're having a bad year. Sometimes years like this build teams to be stronger."

They do say that adversity builds character and what doesn’t kill you, makes you stronger. You know, all the cliches that make amazing sound bites but sometimes aren’t necessarily true.

I don’t think there is a toxic atmosphere around the team, but then again I’m not around the team so I have no idea. Marshall has been in a toxic situation with the 2014 Chicago Bears and he’s certain this situation is different.

"100 times worse because their locker room was divided," Marshall said. "There was a lot of division. There was division between players and there was division between players and coaches.

"We don't have that here," he continued. "We've had some tough conversations -- we hold each other accountable -- but we're still together, and that's promising."

I just think there are a lot of justified questions being asked about a lot of head-scratching decisions. It’s our job to question the team when we’re in the middle of a season like this. The players can be as together as they like, they can be singing Kumbaya while holding hands skipping around a camp fire, but if they don’t win football games, they won’t be together for long.

I’ve said all along that I don’t think Bowles will be fired this off-season, but several coaching changes need to made to his staff. It would be a tough sell to bring everyone back for 2017-18. Brandon Marshall is doing his finest public relations work in backing his coach, and I wouldn’t expect anything less from him . However he’ll need to get back to 2015-16 form if he hopes to save his coaches job in the long term.
