New York Jets head coach Todd Bowles immediately after the Jets lost the sixth game of the season in his post-game press conference: Ryan Fitzpatrick is my starting quarterback for week 7.
Todd Bowles one day later: Geno Smith is my starting quarterback for week 7.
Todd Bowles in the same press conference: I will never tell you about a quarterback change in my post-game press conference.
Todd Bowles in his week 13 post-game press conference: I am changing quarterbacks next week. Bryce Petty will be my starting quarterback the last four games of the season.
Bryce Petty: That's news to me.
Ryan Fitzpatrick: That's news to me too.
Todd Bowles all season: I am playing Ryan Fitzpatrick because he gives me the best chance to win.
Todd Bowles in his week 13 post-game press conference: I am playing Petty the rest of the way, and would do so even if the Jets had won this game.
Todd Bowles a day later: I decided I was going to play Petty the last four games two or three weeks ago.
So much for playing Fitzpatrick because he's the best chance to win.
What does this series of statements tell us? Does any of this make sense? Is Todd Bowles just making things up as he goes along?
As the season wears on and the losses mount it is tough for a head coach in his relations with the press. The same questions keep getting asked, and there are no good answers. Perhaps Bowles just isn't very good with the press. It isn't easy. But maybe Todd Bowles is just in over his head.
