Byrd famously was injured in a 1992 game against the Chiefs on a freak play. At the time, it seemed like he might never walk again, but he was walking again within a few weeks after suffering the injury. While the injury ended his career, Byrd became recognized as one of the most inspirational figures in football or life in general based on what he overcame. His number 90 was never reissued and subsequently was retired by the Jets.
Byrd stayed connected with the team and delivered an inspirational speech to the Jets the night before their 2010 Playoff upset of the New England Patriots.
Our hearts go out to Dennis’ loved ones during this difficult time.
