Babin was a surprise cut. Although the oldest player on the roster, he was still productive. Trevor Reilly had an up and down preseason and seems to have marginal upside, but he made the cut.
In another surprise, the Jets cut both Josh Johnson and Matt Flynn. That leaves the only two healthy quarterbacks on the roster as Ryan Fitzpatrick and Bryce Petty. Some have suggested the Jets might not want to add another veteran before Week 1. Veterans on the Week 1 roster have their contracts guaranteed for the season, and any veteran would be a short-term placeholder for Geno Smith. I think the Jets need to avoid having Petty as their backup. It would be one thing if this was against a strong team and a probable loss if the starter got knocked out. Against the Browns, the difference between a marginal veteran backup and Petty might be the difference between a win and a loss. Whatever savings the team would collect would be pretty small.
Alternatively, this might be a sign Geno Smith is mending quicker than the team anticipated.
I am very disappointed to see Owusu and Powell both released. I thought they both earned spots and were the best options for returners. To see players like Dakota Dozier and Darrin Walls make it over them is a bit of a letdown.
