It is a really nice thing when giving out the game ball is a difficult choice. There were a number of stellar performances last night for the Jets in their 20-7 win over the Indianapolis Colts.
I was thinking of going in a few different directions, but I ultimately decided to not overthink it. Darrelle Revis was involved in three turnovers so he gets the game ball. The fumble recovery on David Harris' strip late in the second quarter was more a case of being in the right place at the right time than anything Revis did, but he took advantage of it. On the Frank Gore goal line fumble, Revis delivered a hit on Gore to prevent him from recovering and then found the ball himself. It was a nice play. On his interception, it looked like he was running the route. That is the kind of play that makes me think Revis' inevitable decline as he goes into his 30's will be graceful and gradual.
His natural athleticism is going to diminish. It already has started to do so. Revis doesn't just win on athleticism, though. He might be the best in the game at studying the opponent and the subtleties in their route running. Smarts and positioning have played a big role in his dominance and will hopefully continue to do so.
Revis also had a nice night in coverage. There were a few hiccups, but given how much of the load the Jets' coverage scheme puts on cornerbacks, he held up well.
Revis gets my game ball. Who gets yours?
