It got lost in the shuffle yesterday, but at the same time the Jets announced they were cutting IK Enempkali, they announced they had signed cornerback Javier Arenas.
We have signed CB Javier Arenas and released LB Ikemefuna Enemkpali.— New York Jets (@nyjets) August 11, 2015
The Jets certainly had their homework done about players on the waiver wire to get somebody else signed so quickly.
Arenas was a second round pick in 2010 out of Alabama. A college teammate of former Jets quarterback, Greg McElroy, Arenas has spent time with the Chiefs, Cardinals, and Falcons. Although listed as a cornerback, his return skills helped get him drafted as much as anything. He owns the 15th best punt return average in NCAA history. He owns a solid 9.8 career average in the NFL as a punt returner.
Before everything happened yesterday, special teams coach Bobby April said Jeremy Kerley would be the primary punt returner with Eric Decker situationally helping. Arenas might have a chance to make himself part of the mix.
