Dianna Marie Russini reports the Jets will work out free agent quarterback Tyler Thipgen on Friday. Earlier today, a report surfaced that the Jets had placed a call.
QB Tyler Thigpen will work out with The NY Jets this Friday per league source. #Jets

Thigpen has been part of five NFL teams during his career. The Coastal Carolina product has completed just 54% of his passes with 21 touchdowns against 18 interceptions in 12 career starts. He should know the offense, though, having worked under Chan Gailey when he was the offensive coordinator of the Chiefs and again when Gailey was coaching the Bills. Thigpen spent 2014 with the Browns.
It feels like this is less about any confidence the Jets would have in a veteran than it is part of an effort to avoid putting Bryce Petty on the field. Petty is likely not ready, and the team probably thinks throwing him out there would hurt his development. It doesn't sound like there is any controversy. Fitzpatrick is the starter, but Petty would now be just one snap away from being on the field.
