In the aftermath of Geno Smith's injury, the Jets are in the market for a veteran quarterback. They have reached out to two.
As you would expect, Jets in the preliminary stage re: adding another QB. A veteran is coming aboard. #nyj— Manish Mehta (@MMehtaNYDN) August 11, 2015
Jets have reached out free-agent Rex Grossman, per source. #nyj— Manish Mehta (@MMehtaNYDN) August 11, 2015
Confirming #Jets prelim inquiry into signing Tyler Thigpen.— Benjamin Allbright (@AllbrightNFL) August 11, 2015
Of the two, Thigpen has experience playing for Chan Gailey. Gailey was his offensive coordinator in Kansas City in 2008 when Thigpen threw 18 touchdown passes in 11 starts. He also played under Gailey in Buffalo as a backup for Ryan Fitzpatrick. As with any team, the options are not good. If the Jets ever got down to a third quarterback, they would be in deep trouble.
The way this story reads is the Jets feel it would be detrimental to Bryce Petty's development if he was to take the field in 2015. They are one snap from that happening unless they add a veteran.
