The starting Quarterback position will dominant the headlines when training camp starts towards the end of next month. However the battle at right guard may be the most competitive one on the roster.
You have to imagine that Ferguson, Carpenter, Mangold and Giacomini are locked in to start on the offensive line, which means the only spot up for grabs is the right guard position.
Brent Qvale got first team reps at the position during OTA's and he continued to get work at mandatory minicamp today too. With Willie Colon nursing some nagging injuries, Qvale has been sharing reps with 2014 starter Oday Aboushi.
Qvale was an undrafted offensive lineman out of Nebraska following the 2014 draft and saw his opportunities limited in camp under Rex Ryan after suffering a concussion. He was cut before the final 53 was announced and added to the practise squad shortly after. He signed a reserve/future contract with the Jets in December and will compete as both a swing tackle and guard this off-season.
Qvale spent some time in college as a back-up before becoming the Cornhuskers starting left tackle. His skill-set is more suited to guard and he'll be given a good chance to earn the starting spot along with Aboushi and Winters who both started last season, as well as veteran Willie Colon and Dakota Dozier, a 4th round pick from 2014.
This is a camp battle to really pay attention to in camp.
