Rookie Mini-Camp A few from the Bleachers 5/9

So today, for a few select fans and PSL point auction winners we got a chance to see the Jets Rookies in action on Day 2 of the mini-camp. It was surprisingly fun, but actually not as exciting as you might think, that or maybe it is because I don't study/watch film enough to appreciate the work going in.

First off, amazing speed getting through for the fans, they had the whole thing running smoothly for the probably 80 people there like my father and I. I'll ignore any minor details about the pre-stuff before the actual camp we could see.

Maybe it's me being 6 foot, but being on the same field with the players they don't seem all that big even the ones I know are taller than me. You'd be amazed in general how spread out everything is during a practice. If I hadn't seen Special Team walking out on the overlook when I first went outside, I'd have never seen them the entire camp.

Mauldin and the rest of the Linebackers, I think have my favorite individual drill I've seen. It's also clearly the biggest pop for the fans. If you've never seen it, imagine 6 foot men hitting a low dummy, running past some cones and then dive tackling another movable dummy onto a crash mat. Mauldin definitely had the biggest cheers in general and praise from the fans, in general even during the 11 on 11 drills, he looks very impressive. Williams looks very impressive, again limited seeing the 11 on 11 drills, but he was just an animal even without the pads.

Petty definitely needs some accuracy help, he has a strong arm and definitely zips a ball but I'd agree with the reporters there, he had a bad practice and was wide or low a few times. But I didn't see all of that much and I will say why.

Suddenly Mike Maccagnan, every person there, fan, security, coach, anyone. By default wore black, green or white. He showed up in all blue, you wanted to say one of these things is not like the other around him. Now I've never met Rex, Tanny, Idzik, et all, but this guy was incredibly humble. He brushed off security that wanted him to step away from the fans when he arrived during team vs team drills. I laughed every time he introduced himself to the fans. Let me say that again, fans approached him and he introduced himself, I kept wanting to tell him you know how this works right? We all know you sir, anyone who managed to get here knows everything but your Social Security Number. But he was great, he talked and did photos with the fans, begged them though to omit and hide his coffee on Facebook from his wife. Deflected questions about Mo, and really showed the fans his insight on a lot of things when they asked him real questions. And the silly ones, like when he talked to a woman about his wife and times here. He had no idea the Fan impact of Revis returning until he saw it, and likened it to if JJ Watt left and came back.

One thing to really note from him, he wouldn't admit to an answer because he wouldn't want to be tied to that whatif but someone asked him who he would have taken at 6 if Williams hadn't dropped. He told the few around him that it was from a group of Scherff, Beasley and White.

As for the other Rookies, Smite was great in what I saw him in, caught I think everything I think I could see of him getting, Simon, Harrison I barely noticed, or at least had trouble seeing I should say.

Didn't get to see/hear Bowles but from what I saw, he appeared to have spent the day with the Offense, he mostly spent his time on the main field area. I couldn't keep eyes on him all that much, he blends in well with the other coaches. Surprisingly I don't think I saw Chan Gailey presumably they were unearthing him from his amber prison for later for Training Camp.
