With the first of their two seventh round picks, the Jets selected Northwestern State defensive lineman Deon Simon.
Simon is a 6'4" 321 pounder who likely profiles as a nose tackle in the pros. Simon;s skillset is more of a two gapping run stopper than an impact player as a pass rusher.
He is your typical seventh round small school prospect. It is unlikely he will make the Jets' roster, particularly given the depth at his position but he seems like a priority practice squad candidate who will get time to develop. Who knows? Depending on how quickly he takes to the pros and whether the Jets make any transactions, he might have an outside shot at making the team as a depth guy.
The Jets turned a small school defensive lineman into a quality starter with Damon Harrison a few years back. We will see whether they can do it again with Simon.
