ESPN's Adam Caplan reported earlier today that the Jets are expected to ink inside linebacker Joe Mays to a contract early next week:
The #Jets are expected to sign veteran ILB Joe Mays, per sources. He's expected to sign by early next week.
— Adam Caplan (@caplannfl) April 10, 2015
Mays is an 8 year veteran, having done stints with Philadelphia, Denver, Houston, and Kansas City. Last year Mays was active for 8 games and played 122 defensive snaps, recording 20 tackles on defense and special teams. Mays best season came in 2013 where he recorded 67 tackles, 1 sack, and 3 passes defensed in 13 starts for Houston. A compact 5-11, 244 pounds, Mays is known as a decent run stopper who struggles in pass coverage due to his height and moderate athleticism. He also is not much of a playmaker, with only 1 forced fumble, 1.5 sacks, and zero interceptions in his career. I cannot imagine that Mays is getting anything more than the veteran minimum and he is far from a lock to make the team, especially with David Harris, Demario Davis, and Erin Henderson presumably ahead of him.
Welcome, Joe Mays.
