Nick Bellore has been one of the most valuable special teams players for the Jets since they signed him as an undrafted free agent in 2011. He has finished first or second on the team in special teams tackles all four years in the league. Now the Central Michigan target is hitting free agency.
While Bellore has been a real asset on special teams, he was unable to play his way into a more meaningful role on defense. He had only 7 snaps as a linebacker in 2014 and was beaten in coverage for a touchdown on one of them according to PFF.
Here is how I view players like Bellore. They get a few years contributing on special teams to try and develop into more of a meaningful role. If they are not able to do that, it is probably time to find the next Bellore, somebody who can provide special teams value and still develop into something bigger. The Jets found Bellore as an undrafted free agent. They certainly can find another undrafted special teamer. I think it is time to move on from Bellore.
