New York Jets: Be Skeptical of Anonymous Reports

DO NOT TRUST ANY RUMORS ABOUT THIS MAN.
DO NOT TRUST ANY RUMORS ABOUT THIS MAN.
Peter Casey-USA TODAY Sports

As free agency and the draft draw near, there are daily reports about who the New York Jets are interested in. Today, for example, comes a Rich Cimini report that the team would like to bring back Bilal Powell. There are a number of reports about the team's interest in Darrelle Revis. Are these reports accurate? I have no idea.

What I do know is that this is leak season, and agents are in full bloom, spreading rumors in an effort to bring their clients' value up. There are a number of "reporters" out there that are essentially shills for a given player/agent. This is especially the case for Revis, as mentioned above. The agent "leaks" info to the reporter, truth be damned, and the reporter reports it. Just because the information is out there doesn't mean it comes from a reputable source, and in the age of anonymous sources, we will never know from whom the info is from, or if it's actually meaningful.

That doesn't mean none of it is true. It means that we all need to be skeptical of any information that's out there. We've heard of the team's interest in a number of players that didn't come to pass. Although he isn't a player, remember the furor over Doug Marrone just a few weeks ago?

Just keep this in mind and keep your expectations tempered. Some of these reports may come true, and others won't. It does us little good to get worked up over them in the meantime though, something I, for one, need to do a better job of remembering.
