Veteran Combine: Roster Set, 100 Players To Attend

The NFL Scouting Combine for draft eligible college players has grown into one of the marquee events of the football calendar. These college prospects are afforded the luxury of having an event to showcase their skills to host of teams in the hope that one of them will make the decision to draft them.

Every single year we see roster cuts, and there are so many that it's natural for some prospects to just fall through the cracks. They are released from one team and their phone goes quiet. They don't play for a year and then all of a sudden you never hear from them again.

So when I heard of the NFL veterans combine, I thought it was a great idea. Give players the chance to compete, a chance to catch the attention of NFL teams, and give NFL teams a better chance to evaluate prospects and build better rosters.

For the 2015 event, only 100 players will have the chance to impress scouts. 2,000 former players applied for the event but for the first year, the NFL had to keep it at a manageable number. If the event is a success, then I imagine we will gradually see it grow and in 10 years time, it could be as big as the scouting combine in Indianapolis.
