Report: James Carpenter to Sign With Jets

Mark J. Rebilas-USA TODAY Sports

Mike Garofolo reports the Jets will sign Seahawks guard James Carpenter.

Carpenter was a first round pick in 2011 who has struggled to stay on the field. He has only been active for 16 games once in four years and at least 10 games twice.

He has gained a reputation as a solid pass blocker, but he really struggles in the run game.

If the story is accurate, it depends on how much money the Jets invested in him and the structure of the deal. There are rumblings about Carpenter not always being in great shape, which combined with his injury history make this something of a risky move. He certainly has more upside than Willie Colon at this point of his career, and the Jets needed to add something at guard.

The money is probably going to sway my opinion here. There are some good points and some bad points about Carpenter. He certainly is a step down from Franklin/Iupati.
