The Jets claimed Walter Powell, an sixth round rookie from Murray State, off waivers from Arizona before the start of the 2014 season.
Powell made a minimal contribution to the Jets in 2014. Powell got only 6 snaps on offense. He was utilized mainly as a returner. There was a stretch between Weeks 4 and 7 where the Jets gave him a chance to be the primary punt returner. That did not go particularly well. Powell averaged only 4 yards per return. He seldom threatened the kicking team and even worse showed poor judgment on when to fair catch a ball. He also turned it over on a muff against Denver. The Jets eventually pulled the plug on the experiment. He did break a 62 yard kickoff return in New England but only averaged 24 yards on his other 7 returns.
Powell is only 23, but I'm not particularly inclined to see the Jets bring him back to camp in 2015. There just isn't anything that sticks out about him. None of his physical attributes are special. He's a tad undersized. He isn't that quick or fast. He didn't flash when the Jets gave him a chance. It won't make a big difference either way, but I'm probably a no bringing Powell to training camp 2015.
