The Jets have officially placed wide receiver Devin Smith on injured reserve. The rookie tore his ACL in Sunday's win over the Titans. To replace him on the active roster, the team signed practice squad linebacker Taiwan Jones.
The toughest thing for Smith will be if he loses practice reps in the offseason. A rib injury caused him to miss most of training camp, costing him critical reps that might have helped his development. Those might have helped him play better and develop quicker in what was mostly a lost rookie season. The injury might put him further behind the eight ball.
Jones was an undrafted free agent out of Michigan State. He profiles as a two down run stopper. After failing to make the roster out of preseason, he was given a practice squad spot.
