Jets QB Hits

There is more to being a pass rusher than getting sacks. Hitting the quarterback is also important. Sometimes hits forced throws to be rushed on a given play. When they pile up, they can make the quarterback jittery and mess up his timing on throws when he isn't even pressured. No, hits don't carry a loss of yardage like sacks, but they are an indication of pass rushing effectiveness. How are the Jets doing?

You are likely aware that Muhammad Wilkerson is coming up big for the Jets in his contract year. You can make a strong case that he has been the most valuable player on the team. His 7 sacks are tied for sixth in the league. Wilkerson also leads the Jets with 16 hits. That also puts him in the top ten in the league, tied for tenth to be exact.

Leonard Williams has only half a sack, but he has been getting to the quarterbacks frequently. He has 14 hits, second on the team to Wilkerson and only 2 behind Mo. This is another example of how sneakily good Williams has been along the tackles he has made to shut down run plays. It has been kind of quiet because Williams' role does not always lend itself to eye candy big plays, but he is playing very well, particularly for a 21 year old who is still learning how to play the game.

Before we get to the full totals, here is a fun fact about Mike Maccagnan's rookie class.
