Just a few days after signing him, the Jets released punter Steve Weatherford today.

Weatherford was signed at the last minute when Ryan Quigley suffered a late week injury. With a strong performance, it is conceivable Weatherford could have taken the job. Unfortunately, Weatherford had a really bad game, which ended any chance of him sticking around.
It does sound like Quigley is improved and ready to go against Oakland.
P Ryan Quigley (shin) is back and healthy, according to Bowles. #Jets

To fill the roster spot, the Jets made a practice squad promotion.
We have signed OL Wesley Johnson to the active roster and signed LB Quanterus Smith to the practice squad.

There might be some speculation about Nick Mangold's status since the team added an extra offensive lineman. It might be they just thought he was the most deserving player, though. The team already had ample bodies on the offensive line even should Mangold not be ready to go.
